The Brave New World of Social (Dis)Credit

(The Stream) One of the Bible’s most intriguing references concerns something called the “mark of the beast,” which a shadowy, satanic figure called the “Antichrist” would mandate. Or, as Revelation 13:16-17 states:

It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark….

Some believe this “mark” is a literal device embedded in the body, such as a computer chip. Others view the passage as metaphorical, with “foreheads” representing intellectual ascent and “right hands” symbolizing action. Some might interpret the “mark” as supernatural, like the ones used to protect the faithful from divine judgement in Ezekiel 9.

Regardless of the interpretation, however, political events and technology are combining to make such a frightening device not only possible, but real.  (Read More)
